Non-issue of Coins: Bahmani Successor States and Coinage

The two prerogatives of kingship that were potent symbols of sovereignty in medieval and early modern Islamic kingdoms were the khutba and the sikka. Yet, the five post‐Bahmani sultanates in the Deccan did not issue coins in their own name till the last quarter of the 16th century. This enigmatic lack of coinage and its reasons are the focus of this lecture.
